The mayor does not operate Rockford Public Schools, and the independence of District 205 must be respected. However, educational outcomes affect nearly every major issue facing the city, including workforce development, public safety, neighborhood stability, economic growth, and property values.
The most recent Illinois Report Card figures show a District 205 graduation rate of approximately 77% and chronic absenteeism of 42.4%.
These are not problems the school district can solve alone. They require the engagement of families, employers, community organizations, law enforcement, faith communities, and local government.

Use the mayor’s public platform to call attention to serious communitywide challenges.
Respect the school district’s authority while insisting that the city remain an engaged partner.
Preparing young people for safe, productive, and independent lives is a responsibility shared by the entire community.
